IWA invites you to present a paper at this leading technical event aimed at finding solutions to some of the water and sanitation challenges faced by the developing world.

Full papers will be published in the conference proceedings (CD version) and the most highly reviewed papers will be recommended for submission to Water Science & Technology and Water Practice Technology.

Programme highlights

The 1st IWA Development Congress will provide a targeted and comprehensive mechanism to access the leading edge of knowledge in the management and delivery of water and sanitation in developing economies. The three-day programme includes the following mechanisms for knowledge exchange and learning from experience:

  • peer to peer sessions that are practice oriented
  • sessions involving platform and poster presentations of scientific and technical papers
  • forums for dialogue on strategic and policy level issues emerging from technical discussions.

Scientific and technical papers sought

The main tracks and topics for platform and paper presentations of scientific and technical papers are as follows.

Challenges to service delivery

  • Mega cities, rapid urbanization and water delivery
  • Inadequacies of conventional approaches to water and sanitation
  • Protecting groundwater as a sustainable resource

Innovation and change

  • Technical options and boundaries for application
  • Capacity building and peer learning – water operator partnerships
  • New research and technology development
  • Applying local knowledge to providing water and sanitation

Implementation and delivery

  • Operating at large scale – learning from process and experience
  • Developing appropriate and scaleable regulatory approaches
  • Policy, norms and standards and their implications for service delivery

Practice workshop leaders sought

The workshops aim to facilitate practice oriented discussion on specific topics and to encourage greater dialogue between presenters and delegates. The programme committee is seeking suggestions from individuals or institutions to organize and moderate the workshops. Suitable subject areas are likely to be new, innovative, rapidly evolving, potentially controversial or interdisciplinary.

Plenary forums

A series of plenary level dialogues on leading edge topics will highlight the science of sustainable development. Presented by progressive thinkers and practitioners in the sector, these plenary forums will focus on hot topics in the sector such as climate change, political economy arguments and public versus private debates.
